The Mercedes-Benz E Class

The Mercedes-Benz E Class is a range of executive-sized cars that has been produced by the German maker in one form or another since the mid-1950s. The E initially stood for Einspritzung (German for fuel injection), with the E as a suffix to engine size (i.e. 220E). It was not until the launch of the updated W124 chassis in 1994 that the E became a prefix, with the engine size following (i.e. E 320).

The E Class is widely renowned as the most durable and practical Mercedes chassis, with the factory offering a taxi specification as well as ambulance and police applications. It is very common to see the E class used as Taxis in European destinations, as the cars can be counted on to deliver hundreds of thousands of miles of low maintenance driving. This is particularly true of Diesel models.

The first E Class was the W120 'Ponton,' followed by the very distinct W110 'Fintail.' This was followed by the W114 and W115, and then the very famous W123, an E Class with Diesel models still in high demand and usage today. The W124 had its US debut in 1986, and is considered one of the most groundbreaking cars in modern automotive history, enjoying a production run of 10 years. In 1996, the W210 E Class was launched, with the current generation W211 coming out in 2003.

One thing is certain: this very practical and durable class of Mercedes-Benz will be around for many more years to come, with each incarnation enjoying a wide following, and delivering many pleasing hours of motoring to their owners.

Record sales in May!

Auto Haus would like to thank our customers for making the month of May an unrivaled success in the sales department, with over 20 units delivered!  We knew that offering expertly selected low mileage Florida cars at very good prices would draw customers quickly, but the response so far has been even better than we could have hoped for.

Because of the volume of sales, we are currently a little bit low on inventory, but are in the process of procuring more top quality vehicles in the immediate future, and stand ready to make deals on the vehicles currently in stock.  Please check our site over the next week or two to see what units are coming in, and give Bill a call at (239) 273-1150 anytime to discuss a car we have or a car you'd like to see.

Don't let this happen to you:

We're seeing a lot of cars coming in to our service department that are equipped with Homelink™ car-to-home wireless control systems, but still have bulky garage door openers tucked under the visors.  Each Mercedes-Benz (and many other luxury manufacturers) since 1997 or so have equipped their cars with this convenient system that allows for you to program three subtle buttons on the interior with three different codes for the electric gates or doors at your home or office.  Too see if your car is equipped, look for three small oval buttons right next to each other on either the driver side sun visor or on a pod in front of the rear view mirror.  For quick and easy programming instructions, visit www.homelink.com, and follow the guide (video or written) to get those bulky door openers out of your car once and for all!.

Mercedes-Benz & Safety

Mercedes-Benz has been dedicated to safety throughout the many years of their production. If you've ever wondered where many of the features on the car you're driving came from, chances are they started in a Mercedes-Benz product. Interestingly, the company is very subtle about their innovations, and even licenses them for use by their competitors in the name of automotive safety. Here are just a few examples:

- In 1924, Mercedes built the first passenger road car to have brakes on all four wheels.

- Safety Cage construction (front and rear crumple zones) was developed by the maker in 1951.

- ABS brakes and airbags were Mercedes-Benz innovations in 1978 and 1980 respectively.

- The 1981 S-Class saw the debut of seat belt pre-tensioners, which tighten the belt moments before a collision, preventing a passenger from jerking forward in a crash.

- In 1987, Mercedes-Benz made good on a 30-year-old patent and introduced a traction control system that worked under braking and acceleration.

- Mercedes has pioneered a system called "Pre-Safe" to detect an imminent crash and prepare the car's safety systems to respond optimally. Occupants are prepared by tightening the seat belt, closing the sunroof and windows, and moving the seats to the optimal position - look for this feature to become available on other makes of cars years in the future, as most of Mercedes other innovations have already.

Mercedes-Benz motorsports: a history of success

For just about as long as Mercedes-Benz has been building cars, they've been racing them - including the world's first racing car in 1894.  The motorsports program from the German maker has been instrumental in pushing forward performance, design and safety standards since the birth of the automobile, and continues today.

The legend of the Silver Arrows was created in 1934 by legendary Mercedes racing manager Alfred Neubauer, who was faced with an all-new race car that weighed 1 KG over the class limit.  Unable to make any technical modifications the night before the race, he instructed his mechanics to spend the night scraping the white paint off the aluminum bodywork - an unusual answer, to be sure, but one that achieved the desired weight reduction and birthed a new racing legend that the press ultimately dubbed the Mercedes-Benz "Silver Arrows," a name still used on certain cars today.

In the postwar years, one might have expected Mercedes-Benz to take a long hiatus from motor racing, but this was not too be - they came back strong with a retooled team of Silver Arrows piloted by legendary drivers Hermann Lang, Karl Kling, and Juan Fangio.

Mercedes-Benz is currently active in three forms of motorsports - Formula Three, DTM, and Formula One.  Their F1 effort is a partnership with legendary McLaren Racing, where Mercedes supplies them with engines.  This collaboration won them Drivers Championships in 1998, 1999, 1nd 2008, with a Constructors Championship in 1998. It also spawned the incredible McLaren Mercedes SLR, the world's fastest street legal automatic transmission car.

While one can appreciate racing for the glory of winning, the intensity of being a spectator, and the artistic expression of machinery in motion, it's easy to forget the real reason Mercedes-Benz gives so much effort toward winning - testing the limits of man and machine directly applies to manufacturing the safest and highest-quality consumer vehicles being produced today.

History of the Mercedes-Benz C-Class

In 1982, Mercedes-Benz debuted their first compact car, an entry level sedan dubbed the 190.  This car was a tremendous risk for the German maker, as they knew failure of this model could bring down the rest of their range and tarnish the entire company's reputation.  Thanks to the tremendous engineering that went in to the car, the "Baby Benz" was an instant success consumers, and opened up the world of Mercedes products to a whole new level of consumers.

After an 11 year run with the W201, Mercedes-Benz needed to build on that success with a new model, and the W202 was released in late 1993, the first small Benz to be officially dubbed the "C-Class."  While the exterior dimensions were close to that of its predecessor, the interior space was improved, and a wagon was added to the lineup. In order to keep up with demand, plants were opened in Brazil, Egypt and South Africa, as well as the two in Germany.

In 2000, Mercedes-Benz launched the W203 model, the sportiest C-Class yet made, and one of its best commercial successes.  Packed with sport, luxury and safety features more common in higher priced cars, the W203 sold in large numbers and continued the impressive run of success inherent to the lineup.

In 2007, Mercedes launched its current generation C Class, the W204 model, which promises to be the most succesful "Baby Benz" yet.

Synthetic Oil?

Our customers frequently ask about the use of synthetic oil in their vehicles. A good general rule is this: since 1998, all Mercedes-Benz products require the use of approved synthetic oils in their vehicles. BMW started a bit earlier, requiring synthetic oil in 1995 on their M models, and in all models the year after that.

Many folks are requesting synthetic oil go in to their older, lower mileage cars, which is fine, but higher mileage cars and the larger motors from the 1980s and early 1990s are better off with mineral oils, as they have less "detergents" that can break free too much debris and clog the oil pump pick-up strainer. This can also promote oil usage on engines with higher degrees of wear.

Check your owner's manuals for the recommended oils and weights for your vehicle, and remember to change your oil regularly - there is no better investment in the longevity of your valuable machine than a clean batch of oil within the required intervals.

Auto Haus, like Mercedes-Benz, recommends and uses Mobil 1 oils on engines calling for synthetics. Schedule your next oil change today!

A short history of the W113 SL Mercedes-Benz

In the early 1960s, Daimler-Benz engineers were gearing up to replace the 300SL and 190SL Roadsters with a single design that would take the best from each model while still being affordable and desirable.  A design team under Paul Bracq created a striking and elegant 2-seat roadster with a uniquely angular top that earned it the nickname "Pagoda" for its similarity to Japanese architecture.

The car was released in 1963 to much fanfare.  It was powered by a 2.3 liter SOC 6-cylinder fuel-injected engine coupled to a manual or automatic 4-speed gearbox.  Over time, options became available like a 5-speed gearbox, power steering, air-conditioning, a small jump seat, and the rarest of the rare - a small mechanical sunroof in the hard-top.

In late 1966, the M127 motor was replaced with the M129, which bumped the displacement to 2.5 liters and changed the badge on the car to the 250SL.  This lasted until 1968, when the final incarnation emerged: the 280SL, which was the pinnacle of the W113 roadster.  Now bumped to 2.8 liters of displacement, the engine produced 170 horsepower, and had become a modern sports car wearing the clothes of a recognizable classic.

1971 marked the last year of the Pagoda, and the peak of its popularity.  Despite a hefty $7500 price tag in 1970 and '71, over 8000 units were produced, bringing the total for the 8-year span close to 49,000 units.

These cars are still highly sought after today, but their high production numbers (comparatively) mean that there are quite a few examples out there.  With time and patience, you can find the right one for you.

1996 Jaguar XJS Convertible

Offered for sale is a beautiful example of the classically styled Jaguar XJS, a 1996 V6 model in Kingfisher Blue with Parchment leather interior, and only 65K original miles.  This Florida convertible is the last XJ produced, and the most desirable of the marque.  Priced to sell.  Please phone Bill at (239) 273-1150.
